2018 Musical Theater Songwriting Challenge Finalists: Eliza Corrington & Braxton Carr


I am Braxton. I am Eliza. Our song is called 10 Seconds to Infinity. It is featuring the astronaut John Glenn
and his wife, Annie, and their love story and what they were thinking during the friendship
seven launch in the 1960’s. A lot of what people don’t know or tend to
know about John Glenn is, he is a big historical figure, the old senator guy my mom knew about
when she was younger. He is either this giant astronaut who is amazing, or an old senator and you never hear about his wife, Annie. In reality, these two are two true American
heroes with a beautiful love story. Because Annie had an 85% stutter and she found
it very hard to communicate with her husband who she grew up with. They always had a promise to each other, because
John Glenn was a Marine pilot. Every time he would deploy for World War II
and Korea, he made her a promise, and it was a simple promise of, I am going down to the
corner store to buy a pack of gum. No matter what condition her voice was in that day She would always respond with ” don’t be long.”
So, in our efforts to keep this untold love story alive, we have written this song,
10 Seconds to Infinity. We hope you enjoy. APPLAUSE J-j-john. I’m scared It’s okay. Not even flying into God’s heaven can
keep me from coming back to you. I am just going down to the corner store to pick
up a pack of gum. D-d-don’t be long. ♪ TAKE A STEP, JUST A LEAP INTO A MOMENT, A
giant jump, I am so close, so near. What a sky. I am up to the task. I will reach and grasp the upper limit of
our stratosphere. Take a look. The sun is rising here at Cape Canaveral,
a golden dot suspended by gravity. In this crowd, I am a face, a speck who is
watching and waiting, hoping for a miracle. And higher and higher and higher I’ll climb. Engines start at the count of 10. Feel the rumble, the thundering rocket below. I hear capcom say ” Godspeed, John Glenn.” 10 seconds to infinity, 10 seconds to beyond. Anything mankind could ever dream. There’s a countdown, an explosion, and I’m
launching towards the stars, forever ago, I once saw a gleam. ♪ Take the seat, hold on tight as you accelerate. Grit your teeth and watch the ground shrink. there is a launch, but he’s trained
and knows exactly how to soar up to the universe, I think. Both: higher and higher and higher I/he’ll
climb. White smoke pours out thick and strong,
I grabbed our daughter’s hand and our son hand one more time, just keep praying it won’t
be long. 10 seconds to infinity. 10 seconds to beyond. Anything mankind could ever dream. There is a countdown, an explosion, and he’s
launching towards the stars. You stare at night and still see gleam. Check the fuel, check the amps. am I still breathing oxygen? A little bumpy about here. Hit the clock, give a Roger, cabin
pressure’s dropping steady, capcom reading loud and clear. I remember Korea and World War II, every time
he would go and serve. He flew 149 combat missions, but space just
hit a nerve. You made a promise you’d come back home. I told you, don’t be long. I keep the gum you slipped into my pocket, while my heart sings our song. 10 seconds to infinity. 10 seconds to beyond. Anything mankind could ever dream. There is a countdown and explosion and were
launching towards the stars. We stare at night and still see gleam. T plus 5:12. Roger. Zero G and I feel fine! Capsule is turning around… Oh, that view is tremendous! Going around for the first time. Going around for the second time. Going around for the third time. I have a warning light. ♪ [APPLAUSE]
