Hurricane Harvey | 1791

For
the last year, every gathering of Hollywood’s
elite class has condemned Donald Trump as the archetypal sexual harasser. The Hollywood
Access tapes, they cried, were uniquely horrific — even by Trump standards. It was as though the alleged
abuse of women by powerful men was so far-removed from their own domain of experience that it
made it inconceivable for anyone of good conscience to support this presidential candidate.
Seizing on this, Hollywood put itself center frame — the voices fighting for the
vulnerable in the country. Every moment the cameras and microphones were cast in their
direction, they seized the opportunity to condemn the man and his enablers. They portrayed
themselves as the stars in a tale of injustice- in a war for America’s moral core.
But behind the glamour, the spectacle, the curtain, the stars of the big screen slinked
away from a menace who lorded a much more tangible power over them. This menace in their
midst sexually traumatized women over the span of three decades. That man was at the
helm of 81 Oscar wins in total. He had raised up some of the most prolific names in modern
film history. To add to this already unrivaled resume, he was thanked at the Oscars more
times than anyone but the iconic Steven Spielberg. To really grasp the scope of this man’s
reach, he had attempted to abuse Spielberg’s goddaughter, Gwyneth Paltrow. As we now know,
some of the biggest names owe the entirety of their fame to this magnáte.
This is a man who truly instilled fear. A man who truly needed brave men and women to
stand up to him. Where was Hollywood? Where was America’s conscience? The morally indignant
drumbeats of those in Hollywood’s upper echelons now ring hollow. In spite of their
resolute moral code, in the wake of hurricane Harvey they have shuttered the windows of
their glass houses. The Weinstein revelations have not only left his reputation in tatters,
but the entire industry. It has blown wide open a culture of fear and intimidation. Though
they feign bravery in the face of a far-flung President, when a putrid man is systematically
abusing women on their very doorstep, only murmurs can be heard.
This speaks volumes as to what the nature of power really is. For even the biggest names
in Hollywood, the criticism of Weinstein was something that required actual bravery. Bravery
implies a willingness to sacrifice your social status and even career for what’s right.
Courage can not be ascribed to Hollywood’s signaling when it comes to the president.
If anything, their continual unwillingness to publicly condemn Weinstein, a man who was
solidly perched at the top of their ranks, reveals a culture utterly consumed by self
interest. The New York Times reports that 40 entertainment
industry players “almost all refused to speak for the record… A publicist for an
A-list actress said there was no ‘upside’ for her client to comment, especially since
she did not have a movie to promote. One producer wanted to know who else was on the record
so he would be ‘quoted in good company.’ An agent said he was repulsed by the silence
and quoted a Latin phrase meaning, ‘He who sits quietly gives consent.’ Then he refused
to talk.” The editor of Variety explains there could
be a more cowardly motivation behind these stars’ reluctance to stick their necks out:
“Part of the reason is that Hollywood always protects its own. Going back through history.
And there is still a lot of fear. Is Harvey really done?” Not only are they afraid of
Harvey’s virtually impossible resurrection, but others like Harvey who facilitate this
Hollywood rape culture. This reveals a group of vapid, status-driven
charlatans who are eager to tar and feather anyone outside of their entertainment enclave,
while they shield their own demons. They shrink from the ability to make a tangible difference
at the first sign of risk to themselves. Hollywood chose to point their megaphone toward their
ideological opponents, instead of facing the monster within. This brings into question
how much of their moral posturing was sincere and how much was merely professional expediency.
There is one silver lining to the disgusting hypocrisy put on display by Hollywood: it
reveals what true Resistance to a powerful force looks like. The liberty they rightly
enjoy to criticize the president without fear of reprisal tells us that we are still free — that
we do not live under the fascistic regime they so often remind us that we do. Because
if we did, they would treat Trump exactly as they have Weinstein — with silence.

I'm a centre lefty who likes your videos but gotta say this one is your worst. I doubt u've convince anyone who isn't a sheople with this one.

I understand that its oh look hollywood is a hypocrite but there are some problems with this. Trump videos was leaked and it is much easier to talk against something like that. And after it was leaked around 30 women came out talking about previous sexual crimes, meaning people were afraid to confront him before he was exposed. You also sound like you are belittling trumps sexual crimes thats messed up.

To state that there is a rape culture in Hollywood is correct however also ignorant of the real problem which is the rape culture of, mostly, men in power as seen by presidents, roger ailes, bill cosby, harvey weinstein, jimmy savile and statistics that show 1 in every 6 women is a victim of rape. There is also a significant difference between the left and right in the actions taken once a person has been shown to be guilty of sexual assault, harvey weinstein will never work in Hollywood again whereas bill O'reilly is rumored to be returning, this shouldn't be a political issue but it is…

We do treat Trump the same way. Scandal after scandal, disgusting borderline crime after another, constant displayes of moral bankruptcy that are afront to everything he is suppose to represent and we do nothing. That same hypocrisy is present in many forms and mediums, need proof just look at this comment section.

I'm not sure I would call all of the accusers "brave" beyond the first few, after the jig was up it was more advantageous to condemn him than to play dumb. In our culture today coming forward was one of the biggest career moves they could make. People eat that up like it's candy laced with cocaine

I don't think they kept quiet solely out of some sort of fear – the only thing they could fear would be losing any chance at a Weinstein production in the future. That means the reason they refused to come forward and put other women at risk is because they knew that if they kept their mouth shut or even played along then they could use him to get ahead in their careers. As soon as that cat was let out of the bag they all just did whatever benefited themselves most, just like they did over the past 3 decades

Honestly, I don't think a lot of these women are the victims that they're leading the public to believe they are. I mean men like Weinstein are usually known for their hanky panky therefore I'm sure that these women have heard something. Then too it's no secret that women will fuck their way to the top because they that the odds are against them and if all they had to do was fuck the fat creepy guy to get that career making role…so, be it. This is simply a case of famous women crying sexual predator just to hide that they were willing to fuck a movie role.

"hollow hollywood" Ya know whats really hollow… There have been people, many people, who already knew all of this was going on. And when they told people.. They got called "conspiracy theorists". Now everyones finding out that all of this was true and not giving the guys that knew about it already any credit. Not that they need credit but.. There are other things that those same guys have been saying, and no one is wondering "if they were right about hollywood being nothing but a commie pedophile racket what else could they be right about?" Of course there are real "conspiracy theories" that are absolute crap, like secret societies of lizard people. Thats bull and an absolute red herring. But if some of the claims they make are "these people who exist but make up a small portion of the population, also make up a ridiculous amount of the 1%, and are absolutely the source of all evil" perhaps considering that that claim is worth investigating has merit now?

I really like the last part–about fascism and how they the real fascism in Hollywood keeps them silent, while they claim societal fascism, at the same time they openly call the president names and threaten to beat him up.

I'm not saying that you EXCUSED Trump's behavior, but it sure didn't sound like you believed the accusations against him.

Are you bent? WHO in their right mind says that the US is genuinely fascist even with Trump in power? It's classic straw man stuff. And at the end of the day WHERE is the courage on the right? Except for a few exceptions (and they are then labelled liberals), there are none. And my God, the Presidency is far more important and powerful than Hollywood. Whoever made this video, if you actually voted for Trump, your video is meaningless and blatantly hypocritical. If not, then forgive me.

    meh. not particularly profound.
it's always easier to point at someone else's flaws or "bad guy" than your own, that way you have no culpability/responsibility and your own house of cards remains intact. just look at the stupidity that goes on between republicans and democrats in the u.s. or left-wingers and right-wingers more generally. the problem with dogmatically choosing sides-any side–is that you tend to stop seeing either side particularly clearly.

Harvey Weinstein and most of the people who knew about his action are terrible but this doesn't excuse the horrible things that trump did. Also, do not paint everyone in Hollywood with the same brush just because you disagree with them doesn't mean their all hypocrites, most people didn't know and some of the actor who did, chose not to say anything because of what could have happened to them as Weinstein was a powerful Hollywood man.

Well it’s still a win that women came forward and revealed Weinstein for the evil man he is, and we were able to take him down. Trump on the other hand is now revoking clearances from anyone that isnt loyal or seems like a threat. And he even expressed he wanted to criminalize news organizations for spreading “fake news” as defined by him. So not sure Trump isn’t veering into fascist policies and actions.

Morals are self defensive in nature. Take stealing. Most theft done anywhere in the world is chance theft done by the Everyman. Phones and wallets found but never returned. Money borrowed but never repaid. Random things unsecured and without overwatch, suddenly gone missing.

And the perpetrators always ready with rationalizations for their behavior won't only not consider what they did theft, they will go on to condemn "real theft" from the other side of their mouths.

To understand what people mean when they talk about morals you must put a "me" at the end of every moralizing sentence they utter.
